Fermentation is the process in which microorganisms or other living cells are used to achieve a desired result or product. GEA Liquid Processing has the experience and know-how of the processes involved in fermentation to offer complete solutions to specific customer needs.
Fermentation is used in, among others, the biotechnological field, the pharmaceutical industry and in a range of food maturation processes to improve the quality of ingredients. Fermentation can be achieved under aerobe or anaerobe conditions.
A sterile nutrient medium is transferred to the sterile fermentation tank – alternatively the tank can be fully sterilised. Subsequently the nutrient medium is inoculated with a preculture of the micro organism in question.
Fermentation can be used in the production of:
• Cultures – e.g. in the dairy industry
• Beer, wine and cider
• Enzymes
Complete Control
As fermentation is a sensitive process, the environment within the fermentation tank must be optimal. Consequently, 100% control over the following parameters is crucial:
• Hygiene
• pH
• Temperature
• Pressure
• Time
Examples of products that are produced through aerobe fermentation are antibiotics, enzymes, vitamins, vinegar and amino acids. Examples of products that are produced through anaerobe fermentation are the production of alcohol, acetone and biogas (Methane).
Our Competencies
GEA Liquid Processing can provide the necessary equipment for a range of industries working with fermentation. As there are larger quantities and productions in play, this would typically be entire factory sections, either up-stream or down-stream of the fermentation process. We design and deliver lines for: powder mixing, liquid mixing and blending, fermentation, fermentate separation, GMO kill plants, intermediate storage, temperature treatment (pasteurization/UHT) and jointly with our sister companies can deliver membrane filtration, separators, evaporators, distilling equipment, dryers or freeze dryers.
