Enzymes and bacteria are used to optimise various production processes – amongst others in the food, dairy and pharmaceutical industries. GEA Liquid Processing has an understanding of customer needs as well as the technical knowledge and experience of enzymes and bacteria to provide the right solutions.

Bacteria cultures are most commonly associated with the production of dairy products. Outside the food and beverage industries, bacteria are also used in the production of pharmaceuticals, e.g. in the production of insulin.

Enzymes - particles found naturally that optimise a process - are for example used in the detergent industry to achieve better cleaning results at lower temperatures. They figure as part of longer processes, e.g. in the fermentation of wine and beer, to give each bottle a little extra. Enzymes can also be used to replace traditional chemicals or additives, as they can contribute to a minimization of the water and energy consumption in a number of production processes.

Vital Facts
Within the production processes involving enzymes and bacteria, a number of vital factors are to be considered:
  • Hygiene – no contamination of the production process is allowed. This is achieved by working with a closed environment throughout the entire production process.
  • Correct sterilisation of the production environment at the start of the process.
  • A homogenous environment for the organism in question by controlling that the correct pH, temperature, pressure and sterility values are present.
