Alcopops are colourful drinks that are marketed to young people. They offer the sweet taste of a soft drink, with a little alcohol mixed in.

Alcopops are soft drink-like beverages which contain some alcohol. They are typically fruit juice based with the addition of distilled alcohol. GEA Liquid Processing can supply all the equipment required for soft drink/alcopop production up to the bottling phase.

The Market
Alcopops are generally marketed with young adults in mind, as this is the market that appreciates the sweet flavours and bright colours of the drink and its relatively low alcohol content.

The Production Process
Alcopops are produced in very much the same way as soft drinks. A flavoured concentrate is mixed with carbonated water. They are usually sweet, but some lemon-based alcopops have a more sour taste. The difference between alcopops and soft drinks comes with the addition of alcohol before the bottling process. The alcohol chosen for the alcopop is used in its pure form and almost any spirit can be used, such as vodka, gin, whiskey and rum, which is dosed into each batch. Some of the most well-known brands of alcopops are Bacardi Breezer (rum-based with diverse fruit tastes) and Smirnoff Ice (vodka-based with a lemon taste).

As pure, and therefore highly flammable, alcohol is involved in the production of alcopops, safety and control should always be at the forefront of the production process.
